Nilathingalthundan in Ekambarehwarar temple Kanchipuram

This is one of the divyadesham Perumal (Thondanadu) inside Lord Ekambareshwarar ( Lord Shiva ) temple in Kanchipuram .The moolavar is in standing position and also known as Chandra sooda Perumal .
Thirumangai alwar has sung praising this Lord .
Once in Kailasha Goddess Parvathi closes the eyes of Lord Shiva playfully , the whole universe becomes dark . Annoyed by this action Lord Shiva curses Goddess Parvathi . To get rid of this curse Goddess Parvathi comes to Earth. Goddess Parvathi creates a lingam with sand under a mango tree and performs deep penance worshipping Lord Shiva in this place .To test her Lord Shiva sends Suriyan ( sun ) . By the suns ray’s the mango tree gets fired Goddess Parvathi couldnot bear the heat , she prays to her brother Lord Vishnu . Lord Vishnu takes the moon from Lord Shiva’s head and sends to cool . Lord Shiva sends Ganges to spoil the lingam made of sand Goddess Parvathi hugs the lingam and protects and asks Ganges to show mercy as she’s is one of her sister .Thus seeing her atmost devotion Lord Shiva blesses Goddess Parvathi and relieves her from her curse . Hence Lord Vishnu got the name Nilathingalthundan .
Another historic event about this temple is the Devas asks Lord Vishnu to bless them with long life . Lord Vishnu suggests them to churn Thiruparkadal to get Amirtham ( a nectar that gives long life ). Devas on one side and asuras on another side Lord Vishnu takes Kurma avatar with Mount Meru on him as stick (mathu) and Vasuki ( serpent ) being the rope during this process Vasuki the serpent gets exhausted emanated poison which turned the Kurma ( Lord Vishnu ) blue to black on the resolution of Lord Brahma , Lord Vishnu worships , Lord Shiva and gets back to normal .
Those who have skin diseases come to worship this Lord and gets relieved from their diseases .
This temple is worshipped by both Saivaites and Vishnavites .
The Thayar name is Goddess Ner oru illa Thai, there’s no seperate shrine for Thayar.
